Common Questions

WHY SHOULD I GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR?

Many people who seek chiropractic care have:

  • Chronic low back
  • Neck pain
  • Restricted and/or pain with cervical, thoracic, or lumbar range of motion.
  • Pain between the scapulae.
  • Localized pain in the thoracic spine with deep inhalation.
  • Pregnancy related low back pain.
  • Cervicogenic headaches.
  • Cervical or lumbar sprain/strain.

Given mainly to the spine, a chiropractic adjustment (sometimes referred to as a manipulation) involves using the hands or a device to apply a controlled, sudden force to a joint, moving it beyond its passive range of motion.  The cavitation (or popping noise) is simply gas escaping from around the joint capsules of diarthrodial joints thereby decreasing pressure and increasing motion in the fixated vertebral segment.

Typically, our initial treatment consists of one or more modalities (electrical stimulation, ultrasound, etc.), massage, and an adjustment.  As the patients pain level subsides and ROM increases an active care treatment plan is initiated which consists of at home stretches and eventually strengthening exercises.  Once the patient’s condition is stabilized, they are released from care and the importance of lifestyle modifications and physical activity is stressed.

Key Points

The goal of the adjustment is to increase the range and quality of motion in the area being treated and to aid in decreasing pain.

Studies have shown that spinal manipulation can provide mild-to-moderate relief from low-back pain and appears to be as effective as conventional medical treatments. In 2007 guidelines, the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society include spinal manipulation as one of several treatment options for practitioners to consider when pain does not improve with self-care.

Spinal manipulation is generally a safe treatment for low-back pain. The most common side effects (e.g., discomfort in the treated area) are minor and go away within 1 to 2 days. Serious complications are very rare.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET BETTER FROM A BACK PAIN EPISODE?

About 80% of people with low back pain improve 80% within 2-4 weeks.

CAN CHIROPRACTIC PREVENT BACK SURGERY?

In the majority of cases, the answer is a resounding yes.  90% of people with sciatica improve with conservative care

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that long-term results for patients that had spine surgery for sciatica are not any better that those that had conservative care.  The editorial for this study pointed out that the decision to operate depends more in part on the patients preference than medical findings.

CAN I SEE A CHIROPRACTOR EVEN THOUGH I'VE ALREADY HAD BACK SURGERY?

Absolutely.  We will review your records and assess your situation and develop a rehabilitation program according to your needs.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING I CAN DO TO KEEP FROM HAVING BACK PAIN?

Stay active, stretch, and eat well.

WILL IT HURT?

Some people experience some short-term discomfort or soreness following their visit, but no pain.  We implement several low force and extremely gentle techniques for those apprehensive of the adjustment and the "cracking" noise that typically occurs.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON MY FIRST VISIT?

You will be given some paperwork about personal details and medical history.  Then, I will take a full case history regarding your complaints as well as pertinent medical questions.

Next, a physical examination with appropriate orthopedic and neurological exams will follow.  At this point, depending on the history and exam information, X-rays or other diagnostic tests may be ordered.  Then, an explanation of the findings and diagnosis will be provided along with the prognosis and treatment options.

If the diagnosis is a condition that should be treated by another health care professional, you will be referred immediately.

Your health is what matters and it is my duty to provide the best care possible.
